This tall and imposing mansion was built in 1840 by a wealthy tradesman. Gun-holes next to the mansion’s heavy iron entrance door and the openings above it, for pouring burning hot oil, give you an idea of how unsolicited visitors were handled in the past. Fortunately, today things are a rather different. The mansion is now a hotel, and visitors are welcomed with wide open arms by the hosts who added a hefty dose of warmth and friendliness to the sober grandeur of the place. There’s a large sitting/dining room in the converted barn while most bedrooms are in the mansion itself. They have a subtle romantic feel (charming furniture and Laura Ashley fabrics). The best are those that overlook the garden. Breakfast is sinful. |
